The M.Sc. program in Biomedical Sciences was founded in 2017.

Aim

  • Our program aims to train highly qualified experts in the research fields of our century such as biomedical systems, biosensors, drug delivery systems, spectroscopy, nanomaterials, and bioinformatics.
Objective

  • Graduates from this program can be employed in universities, research institutions, health institutions, and companies in the field of biomedical engineering. This program also is suitable for professionals who are interested in further doctoral studies in health sciences.

The graduates who successfully complete all courses in the curriculum are receiving Masters of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences.

Specific Admission Requirements

The principles of student admission and registration to the program are explained in the "Altınbaş University Postgraduate Education Regulations". In addition to this, candidates applying to the Biomedical Sciences Master's Program must have B.Sc. degrees from the departments of Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics), Health Sciences (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy) or Engineering (Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering). Candidates from similar departments can also apply.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The prerequisite about the recognition of previous education (formal, informal, non-formal) as well as horizontal and vertical transitions are conducted within the content of “The Regulations on the Principles of Transition Between Associate Degree and License Programs” which was approved by the Administrative Committee of the Altinbas University in accordance with the Regulations of the Postgraduate Education of the Turkish Higher Education Council.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

For graduation, the student has to complete the courses in the program successfully, prepare and complete a dissertation, and defend his/her thesis successfully in front of the academic jury. The students, in maximum 3 years (6 semesters), have to have a minimum 3.00 GPA by taking total 120 ECTS credits, through completing successful 7 must courses of the program and the elective courses of their choice among 11 elective courses that are offered both in the spring and summer semesters. Among 7 must courses, Molecular Biophysics, Physiology, and Molecular Biology courses are conditional-must courses. Molecular Biophysics is obligatory to those students who are from the Health Sciences such as Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and who are from the Natural Sciences such as Biology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics; while, Human Physiology and Molecular Biology are obligatory in addition to Molecular Biophysics to those who are from the other disciplines. The other related principles that belong to the Master of Science with Thesis are indicated in the section of Principles Related to the Master of Science, in the Regulations of the Altinbas University Graduate Education.

Profile of the Programme

The graduates of this program (1) will gain theoretical and practical knowledge and capability in the field of Biomedical Sciences, and (2) they will be Master of Science graduates qualified as a researcher with analytical and critical perspectives in the field of Biomedical Sciences to satisfy the requirements of educational and health institutions and companies.

Besides having the opportunity of working at public institutions, and private research, development, and marketing companies, the graduates of the program can continue their academic careers as academicians at higher education institutions.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates who successfully complete the master program can apply for doctoral degree programs in the public and private universities.

Graduation Requirements

A master's program with thesis consists of a total of at least 120 ECTS credits, including at least eight courses, including the seminar course, provided that it is not less than 60 ECTS credits in one academic term. Introduction to Biomedical Sciences, Scientific Research Methods and Publication Ethics and Seminar are compulsory courses. Other courses are elective courses and have been designed as multidisciplinary. Students who complete their courses on time are required to have a GPA of at least 3.00 and to defend their thesis in front of the academic jury. In the program, which is designed as an interdisciplinary natural sciences and health sciences program, there are expert academic staff from various faculties of Altınbaş University, and there are many laboratories, analytical devices, research assistants and technicians in Mahmutbey and Bakırköy Campuses to carry out thesis studies. Academic studies can also be supported by projects from the university's research fund.
