The Department of Architecture has been established in 2011 and has received its first students on 2012. The Department presented its first graduates in the 2015-2016 Spring Semester. Education has been carried in Mahmutbey Campus, Bağcılar, Istanbul.

The degree as the standard qualification awarded by Istanbul Altınbaş University Department of Architecture is ‘bachelor’s degree’ and it takes four years of full-time undergraduate study to complete.

Students who fulfill the base grades in central examination organized by YÖK (Turkish Council of Higher Education) are accepted to the Department of Architecture. International students who fulfill the requirements of YÖS (Foreign Sudents Exam) are also accepted.
Students who studied architecture in Schools of architecture in Turkey or abroad can apply to the Department of Architecture. Their prior courses and transcripts are evaluated and according to the consistency, they are accepted to the determined stage of 4 years bachelor’s program. Students who have complete 2 years associate’s degree can apply to the Department of Architecture. To complete bachelor degree students need to complete 240 ECTS credits of courses, consisting subject-specific, generic, elective courses, within 4 years (8 semester) of full-time coursework. They must also complete 2 summer practices –Architectural Practice I and Architectural Practice II—lasting 20-days per each in the 2. and 3. years.
Students shall be imparted with an awareness of human, functional, technical, urban and environmental aspects of architecture and an ability to harmonize these aspects in a meaningful and creative way. Regarding the general study goals the Architecture programme is to furnish students with the abilities of critical thinking, methodological research and experimentation in order to encourage their active participation to the processes of scientific advancement and knowledge production and the integration of academic learning with field practice. Additionally the study course shall cultivate in students attitudes and values needed to act in a socially responsive and responsible manner in their future professional and/or academic studies. Furthermore, Architecture programme is to encourage the development of artistic creativity that would foster students’ self-realization and self-expression, healthy decision-making and acting upon their decisions.
Qualifies to apply for admission for Master or doctoral studies.
The studies programme is composed of 8 compulsory modules per each semester and 2 Architecture Practice modules for summer periods of the 2nd and 3rd year. The total ECTS credits for each year are 60, including the summer practices. Architecture Practice I and Architecture Practice II should be completed as ‘satisfactory’ in order to graduate from the programme. The main study program is made up of 26 compulsory departmental courses, which mostly have application/studio component. The student is responsible to complete 16 service courses, which are common for all departments of the University. 2 mathematics course from the Department of Basic Sciences and 2 structural engineering courses (Statics for Architecture and Strength of Materials for Architecture, 5 credits per each course) from the Department of Civil Engineering should be completed. The graduate chooses 8 departmental-elective courses (4 or 5 credits per course) and 2 faculty-elective courses (4 and 5 credits for each).

Students of architecture have been offered to do long term internship in architectural firms that have agreements with the Department of Architecture. This internship includes 2. mandatory internship and the semester following it. Department of Architecture also have ERASMUS contracts with several schools of architecture in Europe. These European schools accept students for 1 or 2 semesters. Along with the education that spans for 28 weeks throughout fall and spring semesters, The Department of Architecture is hosting numerous conferences, symposiums and seminars with invited speakers from the fields of architectural design, architectural education and professionals practice. These activities enable knowledge and experience transfer and interaction between students, academics and professionals. The academic staff is also organizing various workshops for students of Architecture and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design as extracurricular activities in order to improve students’ design skills and awareness of the manifold aspects of architectural design. The Department of Architecture initiated a student project competition series open to all architecture students in Turkey. The student works are exhibited in exhibitions that are organized twice a year in Mahmutbey Campus. The Department of Architecture also initiated the publication of student works a book entitled AURUM Design Notes. The first book of the series is published in June 2017. The academic staff is publishing papers in well-recognized national and international journals and numerous book chapters. They are also participating to well-recognized conferences and symposiums in Turkey and abroad and hev conference papers published in proceedings. There are a number of research projects been carried by academic staff funded by TUBITAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) and BAP (Scientific Research Projects, Istanbul Altınbaş University). Department of Architecture is executing the establishment of an Architectural Office as part of the Faculty to make architectural projects in collaboration with public and private sector.
