PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAMME (English)

Department of Psychology Bachelor’s degree program was founded in 2011. The department started to accept undergraduate students in 2012 with a quota of 60 students. Instruction language of the program is 100% English.

Aim

  • 1. Students acquiring fundamental professional knowledge in the field of Psychology, developing the ability to integrate theory and practice, possessing an analytical and holistic perspective, and making analytical thinking a principle. 2. Our academic staff conducting studies that enrich the field of Psychology while considering the public interest, in collaboration with students and the university; providing beneficial services to science and society through academically supported activities and educational programs facilitated by international collaborations. 3. Our students graduating with a set of skills that will enable them to find their place in both public and private sectors. 4. Our students and graduates being aware of contemporary issues in the field of Psychology; striving to solve these issues without deviating from professional ethics. 5. Ensuring that our students and graduates are individuals with professional responsibility and ethical awareness, and that they reflect this awareness in their professional lives, working with the aim of preserving and enhancing the honor of the profession and public health in their professional endeavors.
Objective

  • The undergraduate program offered by the Department of Psychology aims to provide education that fosters a democratic and scientific learning environment, aiming to cultivate graduates with ethical values and a scientific perspective. It offers a strong foundation in theories, methods, and techniques within contemporary psychology, introducing various specialization areas within the field. This program aims to provide students with a broad understanding of psychology and basic research skills, enabling them to succeed in professional settings or pursue advanced studies at the graduate level for further specialization.

Students who successfully complete the program earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Specific Admission Requirements

Enrollment of students in the program and vocational degree levels in Turkey for Bachelor’s degree is done according to the results of centrally organized exam by Higher Education Act. Center for Student Selection and Placement (OSYM) places students into programs that they are willing to study according to their scores in the central placement exam and high school scores. International students are accepted to the program by the criteria and election of the International Student Election Committee.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Recognition of prior learning is subject to the framework bylaws at national level set by Council of Higher Education and to the related bylaws of Istanbul Altınbaş University. Transfer of students among programs within the university is done according to quotas determined by the executive councils of the relevant schools. Quotas are determined by the relevant executive councils as a percentage of the total quotas specified in OSYM Guide every year. Transfer quotas among programs within the university are announced at the university web page before a certain period of time from the application deadline together with minimum scores and other requirements. In order to apply for transfer within the university among programs of different central placement exam score types, the score of the applicant in the central placement exam for the exam score type of the program to be applied should not be lower than the score of the student who is placed countrywide in a program of the same type with lowest score. Students who complete vocational school programs and the open university programs may appluy for transferring horizontally to Bachelor’s programs. Students who are graduates of or who are at the last year of the study of vocational schools at Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and graduates of schools abroad whose equivalency is accepted in Turkey may apply for transferring horizontally to bachelor’s programs.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total. In order for students to complete their education successfully in our faculty, their GPA (Grade Point Average) should be at least 2.00. Final year students who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 are entitled to take a one-course examination in order to increase the GPA if they are able to fulfill the condition of a GPA of 2.00 from the courses included in the program of the last four semesters. Those who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 through one-course examination are entitled to take a mid-term exam, final exam or make-up exam from the courses of the last four semesters. The students benefit from this right of examination in the exam period during the semester in which the courses are opened. The students who would like to benefit from this right of examination declare the exams that they will take at the beginning of the semester during registration. In order to complete from the Undergraduate Program of Psychology Department, it is required that the students complete all the courses equivalent of 240 ECTS offered in the educational plan of 8 semesters, and they have the GPA with 2.00/4.00.

In the light of our university’s mission and vision, our vision is within our strong education system, we aim to be a department that is among the top fifty undergraduate psychology programs, that provides a democratic and scientific learning environment, and that produces psychology graduates who embrace the code of ethics and possess solid analytical thinking and scientific background. Our mission is, through our strong education system, we aim to be the pioneers of psychology programs in the world and as a department we strive to foster the growth of psychology as a science through our scientific research and produce psychology graduates who will provide the best practice both in the academic and non-academic world. Our students will gain the ability to identify and explain the primary objectives of psychology and to demonstrate knowledge regarding four general domains of psychological theory (1-learning and cognition; 2- psychometrics; 3- biological bases of behavior and mental processes; 4- developmental psychology), the ability to design and conduct empirical studies to address psychological questions using appropriate research methods and the ability to use critical and creative thinking effectively and utilize scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The Department of Psychology at the School of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences at Istanbul Altınbaş University aims to educate the students as innovative and entrepreneurial psychologists with their knowledge and communication skills in the psychology field. Students of Department of Psychology at Istanbul Altınbaş University meet with the realities of the business world in the field of psychology and meet with the leading academicians and professionals in the field and gain from their experience. Graduates in this Psychology program will get diploma in Bachelor degree in Psychology. This degree provides opportunity to work as psychologist in various organizations of state and private sectors such as organizations in health, education, industry, social work and research centers. Graduates might work in governmental organizations, including Ministries of Health, Justice, Internal Affairs, Security and Police Departments etc. As specific requirements are met, they could also work in Ministry of Education as well. However, in order to increase personal knowledge in specific subfield psychology and to work as an expert in relevant area, students are strongly encouraged to get master degree in various subfields of psychology (i.e., clinical, social, development, cognitive, experimental, industrial/organizational psychology etc.)

Students who graduate from the Psychology program may apply for studying at programs at graduate level.

Graduation Requirements

Students should complete a minimum of 240 ECTS credits with a Grade Point Aversge of minimum 2.00 over 4.00 with a minimum letter grade of DD. Students are required to complete intership for a duration and other requirements as defined in their programs.

Facilities

The department has an associate professor, three assistant professors, two lecturers and two research assistants. Successful students can enroll in a minor and double major program. In addition, students can go to internationally accredited schools for educational and internship mobility with the Erasmus + program.
