SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAMME (Turkish)

The Social Work Department was established in the 2016 - 2017 academic year and the student admission to be started during the 2017-2018 Academic Year Fall semester.

Aim

  • Social Work Department; being able to intervene in the interaction points of people with their environment in the light of scientific-professional foundations of social work and evidence-based up-to-date information, by using theories on human behavior and social systems, able to transfer social work knowledge, skills and value suitable for rapidly changing conditions for academic and professional development of social work, able to plan, implement and evaluate these requirements with a generalist approach, taking into account social work ethical principles and standards,being able to produce effective solutions to social problems by using methods and techniques specific to social work by determining the needs of client systems to increase the well-being of individuals, families, groups and society, aims to train professional social workers who embrace lifelong learning.
Objective

  • After finishing the programme, the students will have information about social work practices areas (health, education, social security, NGO, local government), social work theory (system, ecology, empoverment theory), human development and social environment, social work research methodologies and techniques, professional ethics, and principles and values social work practices with different client groups. They will also have the ability to perform a planned change process and will gain the skill for distinction and collection of the appropriate information for social analysis, evaluation and prearation of report and skill of critical thinking in the context of professional social work practices. They will also develop the concept of practising in the context of individual, family, group, community, society and global in order to enhance the social functioning and the social change. ​

Students who have successfully completed the program are entitled to receive a bachelor’s degree in Social Work.

Specific Admission Requirements

Enrollment of students in programs at Bachelor’s and vocational degree levels in Turkey is done according to the results of centrally organized a two stage exam (YGS and LYS) in Turkey according to the Higher Education Act. The Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) places students according to the scores they receive in the examination and the contributions of their high school scores. According to the results of the Undergraduate Placement Examination, students from the Turkish Mathematics - 3 are able to be placed to the Social Work Department. The admission of international students is made in accordance with the Undergraduate Admission and Registration Acceptance Directive. Accordingly, the evaluations and acceptance of students from abroad shall be carried out by an Evaluation Commission, which Senate shall establish, within the periods specified in the academic calendar. The eligible examinations and the minimum scores to be taken from these examinations are listed in the Attached List of this Directive. The level of Turkish of the students who are placed in the Turkish programs is determined according to the results of the language proficiency test administered by the University or a language test (TOEFL, IELTS, FCE, TOEIC, TÖMER, etc.) with national or international validity. Students who have been placed in Turkish or English programs will be taken to the Preparatory Course for one year.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Recognition of prior learning is subject to the framework by law at national level set by Council of Higher Education and to the related bylaws of Istanbul Kemerburgaz University. Transfer of students among programs within the university is done according to quotas determined by the executive councils of the relevant schools. Quotas are determined by the relevant executive councils as a percentage of the total quotas specified in OSYM Guide every year. Transfer quotas among programs within the university are announced at the university webpage before a certain period of time from the application deadline together with minimum scores and other requirements. In order to apply for transfer within the university among programs of different central placement exam score types, the score of the applicant in the central placement exam for the exam score type of the program to be applied should not be lower than the score of the student who is placed countrywide in a program of the same type with lowest score. For the transfer of students among programs within the university where placement is done by special exams, applicants should be successful in the special exam aside from fulfilling other requirements. Successful graduates of vocational colleges and open education associate degree programs can make a vertical transition to undergraduate programs. Applicants who have graduated from abroad on the same conditions as senior students and graduates of the vocational colleges of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus may apply for vertical transfer. If the central placement is required, senior students and alumni of vocational college students who take a special talent exam have to take the DGS examination if they wish to make a vertical transition to undergraduate programs in which they receive a special aptitude test or a centralized system. Vertical transition to undergraduate programs by students with Special Ability exams is done centrally.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students are expected to have the program competencies defined at the end of the program. Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the program (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS). At least 25 % of the course load of 240 ECTS is composed of free / elective courses. In addition, there are applied courses especially in the last two semesters within the course load of 240 ECTS and it is necessary for the students to be successful also from those courses.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of the Department of Social Work is to contribute to the training of academicians and social workers who are knowledgeable, competent and inquisitive, capable of presenting the power of social institutions and social policies.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The graduates of this program work as social workers in the public and the private sectors. The alumni of the department of Social Work are able to work mainly in the provincial directorates with the central units of the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Labor and Social Security; local governments, or in many institutions such as nursery and day care homes, nurseries, nursing homes, welfare advisory centers, hospitals and educational institutions.

Students who graduate from this program may apply for graduate level programs.

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from the program, students must have completed the course load of 240 ECTS. Students must be successful from both all the compulsory courses and all elective courses in the program. Students' overall grade point average should not be less than 2.00 over 4.00.

Facilities

The department benefits from the university's classroom, lecture hall, library and computer lab facilities. The department offers opportunities for minor and major programs. Honor students at Istanbul Kemerburgaz University may register in double major programs. The student who attends to double major programs receives a second diploma in addition to her major field. Successful students may register in minor programs. Any student who attends to a minor program may receive a certificate in a second field besides her main field. There are various student clubs at the university that contribute to the socializing of the students and promoting their senses of sharing and solidarity. Club activities and membership are open to all the students. Students can freely establish new clubs in accordance with their hobbies or interests. The students of the department have the opportunity to participate in academic activities organized throughout the academic year, national and international conferences and workshops, and social social responsibility projects. One of the most important advantages of the department is to be established within the Faculty of Economics Administrative and Social Sciences. Students will be able to take basic knowledge of social work field within the scope of the program curriculum and be able to nurture different disciplines such as sociology, psychology and political science within the Faculty via elective courses. In addition, students will be able to take elective courses from the Faculty of Law. The students are given theoretical knowledge in social work or as an internship to complete the training is given importance. Approximately forty percent of the general education program is composed of applied studies. The internship programs and cooperations with public and non-governmental organizations are still ongoing. Our University has already well-functioning and institutionalized long-term COOP program (university – industry cooperation) and the Social Work Department is planned to be included in the COOP Program after completing the establishment phase.
