PERIODONTOLOGY (English-Doctorate)

The PhD program in Periodontology was founded in 2019 and first graduates are expected to receive their degrees in 2023.

Aim

  • The primary goal of this program is to acquire proficiency and expertise in advanced periodontology and implant surgery. However, it is essential that this objective be complemented by the enhancement of clinical and fundamental research abilities, critical thinking, excellence, and comprehensive assessment. Graduates of this degree have the opportunity to pursue careers in academics or assume roles as clinicians in either the public or private sectors.
Objective

  • The student who graduates from this program approaches the science of periodontology and oral implantology with a holistic perspective and determines the health and disease conditions of the tissues around the teeth and implants, diagnoses and treats diseases, and applies preventive approaches to the maintenance of health obtained with advanced competence. The communication abilities of students will demonstrate improvement and have a predisposition for engaging in collaborative efforts. Individuals who cultivate and acquire leadership abilities possess a comprehensive understanding of their moral and ethical obligations towards society and the individuals under their care, embraces a professional approach, develops a proficient, dynamic, and compassionate relationship with those seeking medical care. The individual understands the significance of patient compliance in ensuring the sustained efficacy of the interventions he administers, possess the capacity to effectively communicate professional knowledge both orally and in written form with patients and doctors across many specialties, as required. The individual will possess a broad and in-depth understanding of the fundamental scientific principles underlying dentistry, including both general dentistry and the specialized field of periodontology, will possess the capacity to use clinical applications pertaining to the fields of periodontology and implantology. As a healthcare professional, s/he effectively addresses the specific needs and preferences of the patient by conducting a thorough assessment and developing a complete diagnostic and treatment plan. The healthcare professional prepares, presents, and engages in discussions on the treatment plans for their patients, presenting them as individual cases. The individual possesses analytical abilities crucial for formulating, overseeing, drawing conclusions, and engaging in discussions pertaining to research hypotheses across many subjects within the field of periodontology. As an addition, the individual possesses the capacity to apply the gained proficiencies in research methods throughout diverse contexts.

The graduates who successfully complete all courses in the curriculum will receive “Doctor of Philosophy” degree in Periodontology.

Specific Admission Requirements

The admissions requirements and enrollment principles for the program are explained in detail under the title of Second Part-Principles Regarding the Admission of Students in Altınbaş University Graduate Education and Training Regulation. Candidates who have successfully completed their undergraduate education in Faculty of Dentistry are eligible to apply. A minimum score of 70 from the exams organized by ÖSYM (YDS, e-YDS, YÖKDİL ..) or - equivalent score from CPE, CAE, TOEFL IBT, PTE Academy and a score equivalent to 55 points or above from the ALES exam is required for application. Due to the fact that the special status student is no longer available for English-taught programmes, candidates may sit an English proficiency exam administered by Altınbaş University School of Foreign Languages. B1 English proficiency level is required for admission to PhD degree programmes. If students achieve passing score at this examination, they can enroll in the programme. If not, they will be required to attend English preparatory classes. If students can obtain the required passing score in English proficiency exam they will take when the preparatory class is over, they will be allowed to enroll in the programme.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The prerequiresites about the recognition of previous education (formal, informal, non-formal) as well as horizontal and vertical transitions are conducted within the content of “The regulations on the principles of transition between associate degree and license programs” which was approved by the Administrative Committee of Altınbaş University in accordance with the “The regulations of the Postgraduate education” of the Turkish Higher Education Council.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The prerequiresites for graduation consists of successfully completion of all available courses in the program, a dissertation proposal and a dissertation. The program consists of a minimum of 7 courses (equivalent to 240 ECTS credits), 1 seminar course and a thesis. The students are required to complete all the courses available in four years ( eight semesters) and to receive a minimum average score of 3.00 out of 4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The graduates of our program will have deep knowledge of Periodontology both theoretically and clinically, and they will be qualified to work in academic institutions or in the hospitals in the field of Periodontology.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The graduates of our program may be employed both in public and private sector as competent professionals of the branch of periodontology. While some of our graduates may provide community health service, some others may prefer to pursue an academic career.

There are currently two professors, one associate professor, three doctors in the PhD program of Periodontology. Altınbaş University, Faculty of Dentistry is located in Bakırköy Health Campus which consists of facilities for pre-clinic, clinic and research activities. Patient care services are given in the Master’s clinic and surgery rooms. There are biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, pathology, physiology, chemistry, biological sciences and pharmoceutical technology research laboratories for research activities of students. There is also a library with a wide range of accessibility to both published and electronical data. Altınbaş University Faculty of Dentistry; has the quality and capacity to provide doctoral education with its administrative, academic and technical infrastructure. Altınbaş University, with its technology and environmentally friendly infrastructure, with1 lecturer per 2 students, with a library providing access to all information centers of the world with a single password and with a state-of-the-art general anesthesia operating room offers a pioneering, effective, efficient and qualified doctorate education with the ability to provide 1 unit, phantom and microscope to each student. The program aims to train academicians and competent clinicians who adopt the holistic approach.
