Istanbul Altınbaş University Faculty of Law commenced giving higher eduction accepting its students in 2011-2012 academic year. The very same year, International Commercial Law Masters Degree Programme started. In 2013-2014 academic year, İstanbul Altınbaş Universityundertook Double Diploma Masters Degree Programme on Turkish-German Law in partnership with Köln University. In the academic year of 2016-2017 began to accept students to Public Law Master's Degree Program. As for 2017, İstanbul Altınbaş Universityhas started its first Phd (Doctorate) Programme on Private Law.

Aim

  • The UOLP-Cologne Program aims to improve legal collaboration and education between Germany and Turkey, as well as to give graduates the chance to live and work in both nations. One of the program's main goals is to help students develop professionally to the fullest extent possible while also preparing them to graduate with a solid understanding of Continental European Law, as well as the languages and legal systems of both nations.
Objective

  • The Altnbaş University Faculty of Law's (UOLP-Cologne Program) mission is to develop its students into creative, entrepreneurial lawyers who will advance the practice of law through their training, tools, and communication abilities. Through optional courses, conferences, and seminars, students have the chance to network with top academics and industry experts while also learning from their experiences. The first dual diploma undergraduate program between Turkey and Germany is the Dual Diploma Turkish-German Law Undergraduate Program, which is run in conjunction with the University of Cologne. The program's main objectives are for its graduates to be able to work in member states of the European Union, particularly Germany and Turkey, and to serve as a professional link between the two nations.

Specific Admission Requirements

In Turkey, students are accepted to Bachelor and Associate levels according to the results of centrally organized university entrance exam. The students make a list of the faculties that are willing to enroll after the examinations. Once the scores are announced, the Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) places students according to the overall score they got from the examinations with the addition of their high school scores. Foreign students can apply directly to our Law Faculty. They are accepted if they meet the requirements under "Istanbul Altınbaş University Directive for Application and Admission of Students from Abroad to the Undergarduate Programmes".

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Recognition of prior learning at national level is subjected to the framework by-laws set by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and to the related by-laws of İstanbul Altınbaş University. Horizontal transfers among programs within IKBU are done according to the quotas determined by the executive councils of the relavant faculties. Quotas are determined each year, by the relevant faculties' executive councils as a percentage of the total quotas specified in the ÖSYM Guide. The transfer quotas are announced on the web site of the University before the application deadline together with the required minimum score and other requirements. In order for students to apply for horizontal transfer within the University to same level programs with different central placement exam score types, the central placement exam score of the applicant (in the year that s/he has taken the exam) should not be lower than min. score of the programmes in other national universities which are equivalent to the programme which is being applied to transfer to.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The faculty of law (excluding the German Preparatory class) is 4 years. A year consists of two academic semesters. There are 14 weeks in every academic semester. At total, 4-year education years correspond to 240 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). Students take the first two years and a total of 120 ECTS at the University of Cologne in Germany and take a total of 120 ECTS for the last two years at Altınbaş University in Turkey.In order for our students to successfully complete their education and receive their diplomas, they need to pass all mandatory classes, complete 240 ECTS and their cumulative grade point avarage should be at least 2.00.

Faculty's %30 of the graduate education is conducted in English. There are Double Major and Minor Programs of Study. İstanbul Altınbaş University’s Double Diploma Turkish-German Graduate Program in partnership with Köln University, is the first double diploma graduate program offered in Turkey. Our Faculty highly encourages students to gain international experince, by being an active participant of the ERASMUS program and by establishing cooperations with other international Universtiy.

The graduates of this program are qualified to work in all legal service related areas of public and private sector; as lawyer, prosecutor, judge, notary, academic, researcher, administrator, consultant or expert. Our graduates are equiped with necessary skills such as fundamental and technical knowledge, communication skills, foreign language, and team work ability to work in above mentioned positions.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of this program may apply for post-graduate programs (masters and doctoral programs) of the Law Faculty or Faculty of Social Sciences.

Graduation Requirements

Under these circumstances, in order to graduate from the undergraduate program of the Faculty of Law, it is required to complete all the lessons successfully (in total, it corresponds to 240 ECTS) and have a GPA at least 2.00 out of 4.00. The part of these courses corresponding to 120 ECTS must be completed at the Cologne University in Germany; and the part of the remaining 120 ECTS should be completed at Altınbaş University in Turkey.

%30 of the Faculty courses are conducted in English. There are scholarship opportunities for students. There is one year of English and German Preparatory Program. Our Faculty offers optional courses to our students in various fields of law, some of which are in English. There are double major opportunities and minor programs of study. Legal studies are supported by international cooperation. There are many opportunities offered to our students such as; participation in the EU ERASMUS program, participation in the Summer School of USA Georgia State University and transfer the attained credits, enrolling in Double Diploma Turkish-German Graduate Program which is coordinated with Köln University. There are also other learning opportunities such as, attending Certificate Program on US Law (CUSL-Certificate on US Law), attaining hands-on-legal experience with Legal Clinic, participating in legal competitions with Moot Court. Our University offers masters program options with International Commercial Law and Public Law and a doctorate program on Private Law. There is also the opportunity to enroll in master’s program of USA Georgia State University and to take US Bar Association Admission Exams.
